Planning Your Dream Montana Elk Hunt

by Mark Richards

Hunting is something that has been going on ever since the ancient times. This used to be done as a form of survival, for food. Today, hunting has evolved into a hobby, a form of leisure for those who seek excitement. Fowl is a common prey when it comes to hunting. If you seek bigger game then, elk is definitely for you.

Big game hunting includes elks, which are some of the biggest species of deer that we have. Montana is known for hunting and elk is one of the main attractions. Before you set out on your hunting trip, make sure that you know everything there is to make it your dream vacation.

Don’t forget that hunting isn’t all about luck. If you know where to look then there is a chance that you will find what you are looking for. Familiarize yourself with the area that you will be hunting in by pre scouting. If you don’t have time to do this check with the department in charge and they should be able to give you information.

Know what type of food and habitats elks look for at the time that you are going. If you can find their source of food and know where they will be staying then they can’t be far away. It’s also always a good idea to have someone with good knowledge on this with you, such as guide or hunting outfitter.

Make sure that you have the right license for Montana elk hunting before you even set out. Montana has online license sales that can help you make sure you get a license even before you go to Montana. This is something that you won’t want to forget, since you won’t be able to hunt without it.

It will be a good idea to check out Montana’s hunting regulations. You may also find additional information that may help make your elk hunting experience better. This information may be available online or directly in the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks office.

Pack everything that you will need. Some of the things that you won’t want to forget on your dream vacation would be a camera, binoculars, insect repellent and sunscreen. Keep in mind that you will need appropriate clothing for hunting depending on the season. Don’t forget to pack a sleeping bag if you’re thinking about a wilderness hunt.

Staying in a place with great accommodations and Montana style home cooked meals would certainly top everything off. There are numerous places to stay, though you may find it difficult to get a place during peak seasons. Make sure that you have reservations before even getting there.
