Home Insurance is a must have whether you are a renter or a home owner. This is a form of protection for you and your belongings. If you own a home and you do not have home owners insurance and something happens to the house, you have no way to pay off the mortgage, rebuild your home, or replace your belongings.

If you have personal possessions in the home whether you are renting, buying, or own the home and something were to happen, your furniture, clothing, and other personal property would be lost. If you have insurance then all of that will be covered. This is the purpose of insurance to protect you in the case of a fire, natural disaster, or a theft. The insurance will repay you for items lost, and pay to have your home rebuilt.

When you set up your insurance be sure that you have an itemized list of your personal property, and if you have any collectible collections such as antiques, or jewelry that you have them appraised or have receipts showing what you paid for them if you want to be able to get their value or try to replace them.

Renters insurance is usually not very expensive to obtain. It is well worth the cost to replace the things that you need such as clothing, appliances, and furniture.

If you own any valuable collections such as fine art, jewelry, or other valuable collectables, be sure to have an itemized list, appraisals and receipts and even pictures of these items for insurance purposes. You should have a fireproof lock box or safe to keep the list in and for any smaller irreplaceable valuables or things that are of sentimental value to you.

Other ways to decrease your insurance costs is to invest in an alarm system, new deadbolt locks on the doors, updated windows, and a dog. These are a few ways to keep your house safe, and make your insurance premiums less. Other ways are to have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher handy. Keep your furnace filters clean and clean dust and debris from around pilot lights. Keep your dryer free of lint and also the dryer exhaust hose.

If you are a renter it would be a good idea if your policy covered a down payment for a new rental or home. Just having your property insured is often enough for many people. If you have a family, you may want to have a place to live until you get a new home.
