The busiest time for a fitness club is just after Christmas but many people stop attending within a few months so if you join a club you want to make sure they will motivate you enough to keep coming back. Finding the right one will be much simpler if you know what it is you want to get out of it. While that is important, there are some other factors to consider before you make your final decision. Not to be dismissed as a minor pint should be where the club is located, if it is not close to your place of work or home you will quickly find reasons not to go.

A good instructor can make or break a club because he is the motivator and that is the most important aspect for users. Always inform your physical trainer if you require any special attention or have any limitations they need to know about in advance. You can ask the staff what services they offer, this will give you the chance to find out how helpful, friendly and professional they are. Many fitness clubs these days have their own specialists to help with physiotherapy or nutrition.

Try to find a club with flexible opening hours because it is no good if you can only attend in the evening when they are closed. If your intention is to join a fitness club for the classes, see if they will let you try some before you become a member. Take a look around the gymnasium to see they have enough equipment or you will find queues at busy times which will put you off attending. Modern equipment is safer and more comfortable to use but machines and other training facilities should be in clean and in good order so if you see a lot of ‘out of order’ signs, it could be something to think about.

Never pass up the opportunity to attend a club function if you are invited before you join as it is surprising who you can meet and you might even find a training buddy. While you are doing this research into the club, find out if the membership cost is fairly stable each year and if there are any other costs involved not mentioned on the club tariff.

Visit more than one fitness club; make up a list, preferably at least three to take a look at, perhaps at different price levels as it will be worth your while to see what’s available. Take your time, there is no hurry and be wary of clubs that continue to contact you about membership as there is a fine line between a courteous approach and pestering.
