Keeping Track of Collections on your Computer

As a child, I spent hours watching my parents organize their stamp collection.  I learned of many far away places and things that I wanted to see when I was older by watching them organize their stamps.  But at the same time, I learned quickly that there wasn’t an efficient way to organize the collection and keep track of what they had - at least not when I was a kid.

But as I grew older and computer software became more sophisticated, I learned that there were software packages that were available that would allow anyone to keep track of their collections easily.

In fact, I bought my parents the Stamp Collection Wizard that allowed them to inventory each and every stamp they had in their possession.  It worked out well as they needed to know what they had for insurance purchases.

I also use the Coin Collection Wizard to keep track of the coins that I have in my possession.  Since they are all over the house, by using the software, I have a better idea of what I have and what needs to be replaced should it ever go missing.

Computer Repair Advice

I have to admit that I am not the brightest when it comes to computers.  A good example is this blog - though it is simple and anyone should be able to do it, I needed help to make it work.

But to compensate for this deficiency, I have assembled a group of friends that are very knowledgeable on the subjects that I struggle with and I rely on them for advice.

A good example would be the last problem that I had with my computer.  You see, there was some spyware that must have got on it and it was acting really weird, and I didn’t know what to do.

So, I asked a computer repair friend of mine and asked what I should do.  He suggested that I use a piece of software called SpyHunter to search and remove all the bad programs from my computer.

After following his advice and trying it out for myself, I decided to write my own SpyHunter review and share it online so that everyone could benefit from what I found out.

Common Errors Made By Microsoft Word Users

by Andrew Whiteman

Everybody knows Microsoft Word. It’s on almost every PC in the world and fair few Macs as well. However, a lot of users have picked up bad habits, things that detract from the usefulness of the document being created. This article looks at the most common basic errors among Microsoft users.

* Are you ever guilty of pressing the Return key at the top of a document to move the cursor down, perhaps when creating a document to be printed on your company stationery? If so, this means that you are creating a document with unwanted characters at the start. Much better to click on File - Page Setup and change the top margin (in Word 2003) or click on Custom Margins in the Page Layout tab of the Word 2007 ribbon.

* The habit of putting two spaces after a period goes back to the days of typewriters and monospace (fixed-width) typefaces like Courier where having two spaces after a period made the end of each sentence easier to detect when reading. Since modern computer-generated typefaces are proportionally spaced, the extra space is superfluous and should not be used.

* Do you habitually press the Return key two times to indicate the end of a paragraph? If so, you should consider pressing the Return key just once then using the paragraph spacing commands which can be found by clicking on the Page Layout tab of the ribbon in Word 2007 or by clicking on Format then Paragraph in Word 2003.

* If a casual user of Word has never had any training, you will often see him or her using the space bar to align columns of text. This sometimes looks as though it’s working on screen but when the document is printed, the lack of alignment becomes very apparent. The only sure way of getting columns to align is to press the Tab key.

* Although you can get away with pressing the Tab key to create columns of text without actually setting any tabs, it’s not usually a good idea. This method uses Word’s default tabs and means that the user often inserts a varying number of tabs between columns. It’s much better to set up your own tabs by clicking on the Word ruler. That way, you will only ever need to press the Tab key once between columns.

* A lot of newbie Word users will always format their documents, even long ones, either manually or by using the Format Painter. The best way to format text in long documents is to use Microsoft styles. Each style has multiple attributes associated with it which are applied automatically to any text formatted with that style. In addition, if the attributes of a style are changed, all text in that style is updated throughout the document.

* Word has a number of AutoCorrect options which can seem intrusive to new users and who complain about them without attempting to switch them off. To modify Word’s AutoCorrect and other settings, choose Options from the Tools menu (Word 2003/2002 etc.) or choose Word Options from the Office button in Word 2007.

What to Look for When Deciding if Broadband is Right for You

by Victor DeMazzier

Your choice about broadband Internet service providers (ISPs) comes down to several different factors. And just one of those factors is price.

Of the many factors that weigh into your decision about choosing an internet service provider, the very first should be an evaluation of your location. This is vital because you can only order service if it exist in your geographic location. It would make no sense at all to research the prices of broadband service when there is no broadband cable or access points near your home. The good news is that if you live in any semi civilized area, you’ll easily have access to a number of quality service providers however many outlying communities may not be so lucky.

Then there are the different service packages to choose from. This starts with considering whether or not you want a broadband connection for personal or business use. For instance, well known broadband ISPs such as Verzion and Verzon carry several different plans at different prices, with some being for business and others are for the home. Since Verzion and Verzon also provide digital telephone and cable TV services, they offer packages that allow you to save some money on two or three individual services by getting them all and bundling the payments. Some plans include a modem (for a few extra bucks a month if you don’t buy it outright), others don’t (if you have one). Verzion offers a plan that is just for Internet access only, as well.

Just as there are multiple things to consider when selecting an internet service provider, there are also multiple methods of payment as well. While many people pay on a month to month basis for service that is not your only option. Most of the companies will also allow you to pay for a years worth of service up front. This is a real benefit for those of you who have an income that fluctuates from month to month. This is a great option if you are truly satisfied with the service they provide and desire a significant discount.

One thing that should be abundantly clear in your decision making process is that surfing the web with a 56k modem is as outdated as the Flintstones. Now, especially with the advent of internet video and file sharing applications, you almost can’t do without a high speed broadband connection. If you have ever tried navigating the internet via dial up, you easily see the overwhelming need for lightning speed broadband service.

But keep in mind that you have to have a fairly modern computer (nothing older than about three years) and an operating system no older than Windows 98 or OS X or 10.3 or higher to be able to get broadband service at all; and you will have to be able to afford a higher monthly payment than you need with dial-up.

Conducting A Simple Registry Scan

by Julian Bates

It can sometimes become necessary to conduct a registry scan on your PC, especially when symptoms of registry problems keep on occuring.

Symptoms of problems with your registry range from error messages relating to different processes and applications, to blue screen known as the “Blue Screen of Death” and a total system failure that won’t allow you restart your computer.

It’s very important that you keep your registry clean and error free so that it can work properly. Neglecting your registry in your computer is like neglecting the engine in your car, it’s only a matter of time before it develops problems.

A simple and fast way to conduct a scan on your PC is to use software called a registry cleaner.

Registry cleaners were designed to make it easy for computer owners to maintain their computer’s registry.

Without a registry cleaner you’ll have to manually edit your registry which is not advisable unless you are an expert. Once you own a registry cleaner you are able to clean your registry in a matter of minutes.

Having purchased a registry cleaning program and installed it, you will first need to perform a scan. Once your registry cleaner scans your registry, files, keys and obsolete entries can be removed and the resulting holes filled, keeping your system’s registry from becoming fragmented.

Once you do this you’ll find you will greatly increase the data access time for your PC’s registry which will mean all your applications and programs will start and respond a lot faster than they did before.

Remember to always make sure you back up your registry files before making any changes. Your registry cleaner software normally has this option as well. This is done in case something goes wrong during the registry cleaning, so that the backup registry can be restored.

Why Purchase an Unlocked Cell Phone?

by Steven Wade

Unlocked Cell Phones, for Those with a Fear of Commitment

When you have finished your Cell Phone contract you maybe left with a fantastic phone, Well most networks lock there phones so that you can only use them on their network. This is when getting an unlocked cell phone will pay off. Unlocked refers to the SIM card; an unlocked cell phone doesn’t have a fixed service plan or a fixed network it can be operated from. This means that one is just purchasing the phone not a service plan or signing up with a cellular service provider. This is a nice option for people who don’t want to purchase a phone/service plan combination or that want a certain phone that they are unable to purchase from a retailer for their cellular service company.

Why Aren’t Cell Phones Unlocked in the First Place?

To guarantee a customer stays with a particular service provider all cellular service providing companies electronically lock their cell phones, to ensure they may only be used with their network. This is done with the SIM card which stores all the phones customized information, when it connects to the provider’s network, the SIM card is sent an electronic signal which prevents another provider’s network from accessing the card; this is where roaming charges come from, one company charging another to use it’s service towers. But depending on how much you pay for your Cell Phone a month, you may already have a cell phone that is unlocked.

How Can you Unlock a Cell Phone?

There are ways to unlock a cellular phone by entering a particular code which will remove the electronic lock placed on it. There are companies which sell this information on the internet; these companies will research the phone figure out its SIM card’s code and send it to the end user to unlock their phone to use with another service provider. This could be very helpful to a person who travels frequently for work or pleasure, as it may reduce roaming charges; unlocked cell phones may connect to any network. You can get software that will unlock it for you.

Sometimes Unlocking a Cell Phone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

Unlocking a cellular phone doesn’t guarantee that the phone will work with all networks, the only way to guarantee an unlocked cell phone will work is to purchase it new from a third party dealer. Alternately if one were to choose to unlock an existing cell phone their first choice should be to ask their provider to unlock it. The reason for this is simple, because there is no “hacking” into the phones memory or dealing with a third party vendor that little is known about, going directly to the company is probably a safer route. But some companies will provide this service for you online.

An Unlocked Cell Phone Isnt for Everyone

The largest downfall and deterrent from purchasing an unlocked cell phone from a third party vendor is the price tag; the cost for an unlocked cell phone is nearly the manufacturers suggested retail price. For this reason many people choose to purchase a cell phone/service plan combination package which will give the person the phone free or nearly free, when they sign a user agreement. Your network provides may unlock your phone for you if you ask them.

We hope this has helped you make your decision. In our opinion if you do buy a mobile phone that is locked you can find software to unlock it very easily.

Your Choice About Broadband

by Victor DeMazzier

Your choice about broadband Internet service providers (ISPs) comes down to several different factors. And just one of those factors is price.

Of the many factors that weigh into your decision about choosing an internet service provider, the very first should be an evaluation of your location. This is vital because you can only order service if it exist in your geographic location. It would make no sense at all to research the prices of broadband service when there is no broadband cable or access points near your home. The good news is that if you live in any semi civilized area, you’ll easily have access to a number of quality service providers however many outlying communities may not be so lucky.

After you have determined if broadband is available in your area, the next step is to decide your true needs. For example, will you be using your service for personal use or more for business? Will you have one computer using the connection or multiple? The answers to these questions can mean the difference in the cost of your service. For instance, Internet service providers like Verzion and Verzon have packages that service the needs of both the home user and business. In fact, if you bundle multiple services many of these companies offer incredible discounts than you would otherwise get if ordering them separately. As an example, Verzion has a plan similar to this that it offers its customers.

On a positive note, the fact that web browsing with the old school dial-up connections are so outdated, just about all the major service providers have kept up with the latest trends in fiber optics and satellite technology. Today, not only can your computer reach speeds equivalent to 100 m.ph. on the highway, but so can your cell phone. The web surfer’s new mantra is now, long live broadband.

Also, as you are researching the many different service options, remember that in order to get the most effective service, you must own a computer that is modern enough to handle the new and advancing technology. If you have a system that is using at least Windows 98 or a newer version, you should have no trouble getting a quality broadband connection.

PC Security - Combating Viruses Beyond the PC

by Theo McLanahan

You would be hard pressed to find any computer connected to the Internet without some type of anti-virus software to protect from the thousands of viruses circulating the World Wide Web. However, viruses can hit more than just computers. We need to learn how to protect all vulnerable technology such as routers, networks, and servers.

Routers are used to route network traffic, and are basically a special type of computer. Servers work to serve computers on a specific network.

They typically have more space, more memory, and are faster. There are several different types of servers, such as web servers, file servers, and email and ftp servers.

Anti-virus software is a must for all of these types of systems. They are vulnerable to the same viruses which plague our PCs. Therefore we must work diligently to ensure that they are protected from malicious viruses such as Trojans.

One way that servers and routers can be infected by viruses is from computers which are connected to them. Users can help by ensuring that there computer’s are virus free and thereby prevent the spread to servers or routers.

Users can do this by not only installing and running anti-virus software, but also by using Internet browsers which allow them to limit what types of websites can be visited and what those websites that are allowed may install.

It is also important for all users on a network to be diligent when it comes to opening emails. Most viruses are spread via email attachments which usually come in the form as an executable file, but may come with image attachments as well. Users should never open an email attachment if they don’t know the source or if it hasn’t been scanned for viruses.

In order to better protect servers, routers, and other important systems on our networks, technology companies are working towards better security options. Preventing viruses is vital to keep networks running smoothly.
