You probably know that walking is a great way to stay healthy physically. It provides cardiovascular benefits, burns calories, and increases blood flow to various parts of your body that need it. However, have you ever thought of combining the time you spend walking with spiritual and mental meditation, so that you can increase the benefits walking can offer you?

It's easy to reap the health benefits of walking. It doesn't require any special gear, and it's a skill most of us have had since childhood.

With walking meditation, you want to be focused on walking as an experience. Keep your mind focused on the process; focus on the steps you're taking first with your right foot, then your left foot.

Frequently, meditation involves closing your eyes in order to shut out distractions and clear your mind. But meditation while walking necessitates that your eyes stay open, not only so that you can see where you're going, but also so you can take in your surroundings and incorporate them into your mindfulness.

The ideal surroundings for walking meditation are somewhere peaceful and appealing. Your neighborhood park is good; road construction is bad. Your environment should be inviting enough that time passes quickly and pleasantly. You should aim to walk for a minimum of 20 minutes each time.

When you start to walk, use good posture and keep your arms at your sides. Focus on a point about 3 to 6 feet in front of you as you walk.

Of course, walking will help your body and your health in many ways. It provides more serotonin to improve your mood as well. If you add meditation to your walk, your exercise program will become even more powerful and further improve your mind as well as your body.

Have you given any thought to what time of day you will be working out? Sometimes our schedules are such that we are limited on what times of day we can go to the gym. Double (and triple) check to be sure they will be open during the hours you need them. Some gyms have limited daily hours and it would be a shame to pay for a membership you can't use.

Will you be using a trainer? You'll want to be sure that they are experienced and know what they're doing. You want someone that will teach you the best possible habits and will show you how to get the most out of your session - without injury. Plus, just look at them. Do they look like they know what they are doing? A fat trainer is like a smoking doctor that is advising you to quit smoking.

Check to see if the gym requires some sort of training. Unfortunately, there are no qualification standards for trainers so be sure the gym insists that they have the skills they'll need.

What and how much equipment is available. Most people tend to do their workouts at similar times and one or two treadmills just won't be enough. It can be very frustrating to be trying to complete a circuit of training and have to wait in line at each piece of equipment. Or, conversely to have someone waiting and glaring at YOU.

Most of the equipment involves lifting weight in some fashion. (Sometimes a LOT of weight.) Worn, malfunctioning gear can be very dangerous. Is the equipment in good repair?

Do they keep the facility in good repair and clean? A whole host of illnesses can spread from member to member in a dirty gym. Clean locker rooms are the result of cleaning crews. Not magic. Do they provide antibacterial products to wipe down the equipment after a session? The better gyms do. There's never a reason to have weights lying around for people to trip over.

Always take a tour of the facilities before signing anything. Most gyms offer a free or low cost trial membership. You should take advantage of that so you can see the gym and how it is functioning - away from the salesman and in the hours that YOU will be there exercising.

Be sure to shop around. The prices vary greatly. Taking the time to check all the gyms in your area could produce one that is far better than the all the rest - and cheaper too!

Some charge a yearly fee. Some automatically charge a credit card every month while others invoice you every month. A gym membership can add up to a substantial amount of money as time passes and you owe it to yourself to take the extra time to make sure you've made the choice that is right for you.

Let's face it; walking on a treadmill can get rather boring after a while. But, the good news is there are many things you can do to make your treadmill workouts fun and interesting again. Here are just a few:

Pyramid Walking. One way to keep your mind from growing bored during treadmills workouts is to try mental challenges. Pyramid walking is when you try to increase your walking speed by .1 mph every minute for 15 minutes. Then, decrease your walking speed by .1 mph every minute for the last 15 minutes.

Dancers. If dancing is a favorite pastime, you can build up your strength and increase your balance by walking backwards on your treadmill. Keep your pace steady and even. This should only be tried by people who have good coordination!
