Got a scrape, crack, or soft deck on your power boat or sailboat? Here's a quick, easy fix that will save you money. There are many different ways to go about the repair, but my method works and is not too difficult to master.
Let's get started fixing that crack.
Even a professional repair job will never make the area look exactly the way it did before, but most likely no one but you will notice the difference. If your jib pole came loose or the anchor swung around, you're likely to see damage. Just cutting through the waves causes cracks on boat power and sailboats. Sailboats get the additional abuse when heeling over.
My repair method is a compilation of techniques I learned from books, and a little tweaking of my own. Here is my procedure for any easy repair:
What you'll need:
1. Get a Bondo can (auto/marine body filler), that is short and wide, with a plastic top. This comes with the catalyst you will need.
2. Sandpaper/wet & dry (emery cloth), 1 sheet of each: #220, #300, #400, #600
3. Gel Coat color from the manufacturer - it's worth the wait to get it. If not, you can use white gel coat with the tints you need to get it right. Most stores have a chart. You can mix the gel coat over the winter. Get the right color card from Home Depot, and you can play with the color over the winter, until you get a match, and save it in a jar for the spring.
4. Acetone
5. Masking Tape
6. Spray bottle, sold in marine supply or hardware stores.
7. Screwdriver or metal pick
8. Newspaper
As you can see, there is a very minimal investment in purchasing the necessary materials, plus they should last through about 10 repairs.
1. Apply acetone to a clean rag and clean the crack area. Don't go overboard with the acetone. Once the dirt and wax are out of the way, you'll have a better view of the crack. Now you can see the original gel coat color. It will be brighter than the rest of the boat. To match up your repair color to the rest of the boat, you may want to add a little yellow or black tint. If compounding the original color, just stick to the gel coat color as is. Sand the crack #300 wet grit sandpaper.
2. Now that the gel coat is ready, let's get back to the crack. After using some acetone and sanding right around and in the crack, use a flat hand screwdriver or metal pick to loosen any material in the crack. Make good, fat edges at either side of the crack. Chip away at it until you get to good, uncracked gel coat. Sand the area, blow out and acetone again.
3. Tape newspaper around the repair area with masking tape to prevent any overspray from going on the rest of the gel coat surface.
4. Depending upon how deep the crack is, you may need to use the bondo to fill it in. I prefer a white colored filler with fiberglass strands. Combine the bondo with the right amount of catalyst, then apply to the cracked area. If the cracked area is small, the screwdriver should work fine for applying the mixture. Only apply it to the inside of the crack. Keep the filler level with the surrounding gel coat. Once dry, sand the crack with the 220 or 300 grit and make a slight depression in the plastic. The weather and amount of catalyst used will vary the drying time. When dry, clean the area again with acetone.
5. Get the sprayer, read the instructions. Pour the gel coat (factory or mixed) into the jar. Add some acetone to cut the thickness of the gel coat so it can spray out. Add the proper amount of catalyst, stir and screw the jar back on and you're ready to go.
6. Before you start spraying the repair area, practice first on cardboard. Get yourself used to the left and right motion of spraying. This creates an even coat. Begin from the left, squeeze the nozzle, move to the right, release the nozzle. Repeat this process, beginning from the right. Once you get the feel, spray the repair area. Don't try to get full coverage in just one or two coats. Several thin coats will come out much better. Warm weather makes for quick drying time. If it's cool out, point a utility lamp at the repair area. Drying should take between 15 minutes to an hour. If you're not in a rush, just let it dry overnight. If the proportion of bondo to catalyst is off balance, you may find the area won't dry. When this happens, just remove the bondo with acetone and give the repair another try. It takes a bit of practice to get the amount of catalyst right, but you'll be a pro before long.
7. After the gel coat hardens, take that plastic cup top and put some water in it. Rip a 1" x 4" piece of emery cloth off the 220 or 300 grit. Soak it a bit and also put some water over the repairs. Wipe it around. Now, with the emery cloth pliable, lightly sand over the repair. Feel the coarseness of the area you are sanding. Add more water if it feels pretty flush with the surrounding area. Move to 400 grit, then to 600 grit. Get it nice and wet. Watch not to take too much gel coat off. Do a little check.
8. Lastly, apply a little white compound to the area. Wash and wax the area. Over time, the area will fade a bit and blend into the rest of the finish better. A scrape is treated the same way, but can sometimes be repaired by just giving the area a light sanding with wet 300 or 400 grit emery cloth.
The whole process becomes very simple with a little practice. It's well worth trying for the amount of money you will save.
While Barry Bonds is known as an incredible baseball player, it is other things about him which may eventually be what he is remembered for.
