The vast majority in our society today consider it simply a myth... an explanation belonging to yesteryear... an out-of-date and thoroughly discredited theory. Yes, it's readily believed that science has disproved the very concept of a Creator God and the Bible is rejected as no more than a collection of fairy tales. And yet, do you really believe that absolutely nothing made absolutely everything? Surely this requires an even greater 'leap of faith' than to accept that a designer and creator is responsible for all the order, structure and sheer ingenuity we see, not only in the human body, but throughout the natural world.
Yet even in believing in the existence of a Supreme Being so many of us live as though He's 'surplus to our requirements', especially in our digital, high-tech world on course to be dominated in days to come by artificial intelligence.
LIVING WITHOUT GOD
This reminds me of the following story...
One day a group of very clever scientists decided that they could do
without God. So one of them looked up to Him and said, 'We've decided
that we no longer need You, thanks all the same. We have enough wisdom
not only to clone people but to do many other miraculous things.'
God listened patiently and then said, 'Very well, let's
have a man-making contest. We'll do it just as I did back in the
old days with Adam.'
The scientists agreed, and one of them bent down and picked up
a handful of dust. God looked at him and said,
'No! No! You have to make your own dust.'
In a day when 'my way' has become something of a moral virtue it's so easy to live our daily lives as if He didn't exist... and instead to be worshipping the idol of our own wisdom and self-sufficiency. How easily we can forget that...
'The earth is the LORD'S and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.'
Psalm 24:1-2
LIVING WITH GOD
Of course most serious of all is to disregard, neglect or reject the 'gift' of God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. This is because despite all the wonderful technological advances made over the years there remains something missing at the very core of our lives. And we can never know the joy of true, lasting fulfilment unless and until we enter into the personal relationship with God the Father which was intended for us from the very beginning. This is only possible when in genuine repentance we ask the risen Christ Jesus to become our Saviour and Lord. And the Lord Jesus tells us how this is possible when He says...
'I am the way, and the truth and the life.
No-one comes to the Father except through me.'
John 14:6
As we look around the world it's difficult to put our faith in the evolutionary optimism of human potential. And in a day when silicon valley billionaires are looking to science for some way by which that can live forever, why not let the risen Christ have the last word...
'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.'
John 11:25
Technology has it's place, but it'll never replace God... Designer and Maker of everything.
