Down through the years men and women the world over have pondered the meaning of life. What's it all about? Can it ever be truly fulfilling? Is this really as good as it gets?
THE FUTILITY OF LIFE
Some of us may even be afraid to ask such questions, afraid that our disillusionment might worsen if we fail to find a satisfactory answer. But if this applies to you, then you're in good company. Just look at the conclusions reached by some of the world's best writers...
'Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.'
William Shakespeare
'Life is but an empty dream.'
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
'Life is made up of sobs, sniffles and smiles, sniffles predominating.'
O. Henry
'Life is one long process of getting tired.'
Samuel Butler
'Life is but a dirty trick, a short journey from nothingness to nothingness.'
Ernest Hemingway
'Life is indefinite waiting for an explanation that never comes.'
Samuel Becket
So what's the problem? Why do we always seem to crave something more? Well, I have no doubt that the answer is well summed up by another writer, AW Tozer...
'Deep in the soul of any person on Earth is a longing for the presence of God.'
THE FULNESS OF LIFE
And of course the Bible tells us that we're all made for a personal relationship with God. But although He's reaching out to us in love, most of us would rather resist Him, preferring to go our own way and do our own thing. Sadly we can even climb the ladder of success, only to find that when we've reached the top, there's nothing there of any lasting value. Yet, in the midst of all our disappointments, frustrations, faults and failings, there is an answer. He offers us a brand new start in life when we seek His forgiveness, turn from all we know to be wrong and ask the risen Christ Jesus to become our Saviour and Lord...
'..if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone,
the new has come!'
2 Corinthians 5:17
We're also given the motivation and power to live a new lifestyle... pleasing to Him.
The Cross of Christ shouts out to our world... and yet sadly it's a world which is simply too busy, too noisy, too proud and too self-absorbed to listen. Yet through the Lord Jesus Christ life can be for us what God the Father originally intended it to be. We can live a life of love, joy and peace, with true and lasting fulfilment... promised by the Lord Himself...
'...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.'
John 10:10
He wants us to know Him, not simply by hearsay, but by acquaintance... as our true and faithful Friend and ever-present Helper in every situation.... and He's only a prayer away!
